Matthew 26: 36-38 Then cometh Jesus with them to a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, "Sit ye here while I go and pray yonder." And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy.

The Garden of Gethsemane lies on the eastern slope of the Mount of Olives and in Jesus' time had an olive press for making the oil from the abundant olive trees that grew here. It was apparantly a favorite place for Jesus to pray away from the city. It is one of the sites, familiar to Jesus, that remains today much as it was in his time, perhaps with the very same olive trees. There are eight olive trees in the garden which some botanists clain to be 3,000 years old. It is here within the shadow of this very olive tree where Jesus was arrested by temple guards and taken to the house of Caiaphas. (Photo. Jack Kilmon)
