Matthew 26:57 And they that had laid hold on Jesus led him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled.

The Church of St. Peter in Gallicantu now occupies the site of the house of Caiaphas. Excavation of the site had produced a complete set of Hebrew measures, a dungeon, where Jesus may have been held, and a courtyard. During the excavations on the left side of the church, the ancient stairs that led from Gethsemane through the Kidron Valley to the Upper City was uncovered. These are the steps upon which Jesus himself often trod on his travels and upon which he was led on that day of his arrest. (Photo. Jack Kilmon)
